Task Force on the Future of Higher Education

The Task Force on the Future of Higher Education was established by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education in March 2017 to consider ways to improve degree completion and increase productivity by focusing on modernization, efficiencies and innovation.

The task force was charged to examine every aspect of system operations, including academic models, such as program and faculty sharing and targeted degree completion initiatives; online education models; structure; fiscal services and operational efficiencies; workforce development; and information technology to ensure they are properly aligned and defined to best serve the students and state.

The task force conducted a systematic and thorough review of the current status of higher education in Oklahoma; examined existing initiatives and best practices; and reported to the State Regents findings and recommendations on strategies that best support improving quality, access, affordability and efficiency in the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education.

Members included the State Regents, private citizens, college and university representatives, and the designees of Gov. Mary Fallin, Speaker of the House Charles McCall and Senate President Pro Tempore Mike Schulz. Citizen members are well-respected Oklahomans who come from a variety of professional and educational backgrounds and represent different geographic regions within the state. Members conducted their work through subcommittees that focused on four key priority areas: college degree completion and workforce development initiatives; academic program innovations and online education; system structure; and fiscal solutions, efficiencies, affordability and technology.

Following months of discussion and analysis, the task force unanimously approved its Report on the Future of Higher Education (PDF, 5m), which outlines the task force’s assessment process and recommendations to strengthen Oklahoma public higher education. The report was unanimously accepted at the State Regents’ Feb. 1, 2018, meeting.
